Christopher’s Father only seems to be nice to him when he needs to make up to him. His offer to take Christopher to the Zoo seems like a bribe to get him to like him again after he knocked Christopher out. Even so there are several instances in the novel where you can see that his father really cares for Christopher. I think he’s afraid to lose Christopher especially after losing his wife. His father may be lying to him in order to protect him from the hurt he feels.
